DTF, or Direct to Film, is a printing technique where the design is printed onto a special PET film. This film, coated with a powder adhesive, is then heat-transferred onto a T-shirt. DTF printing works well on cotton, polyester, and blended fabrics and can be used on both light and dark colours, as it includes white ink to give right opacity and vibrancy on any garment colour.
Garment Printing's DTF Printing services in Australia offers the perfect solution for your next garment printing needs. With this innovative process, your chosen design is printed onto transfer paper and then easily transferred onto your garment using heat.
Direct to Film (DTF) printing is a process where designs are printed onto a special PET film before being transferred onto fabric of the clothes including shirts. Here is how this garment printing technique is done:
Create or select a design for printing. Ensure the design is in high resolution and the desired dimensions for the t-shirt.
Print the design onto the film using a DTF printer. The printer uses DTF-specific inks, including CMYK and white ink. The white ink layer is printed last to serve as a base for the coloured inks.
Apply DTF powder (hot melt powder) evenly over the wet ink on the printed film. This powder acts as an adhesive, bonding the ink to the fabric during the heat transfer process.
Melt the powder by curing the printed film with the applied powder. This is done using a curing oven in a tunnel above and below the film without touching it. The melting process activates the powder's adhesive properties
Pre-press the t-shirt using a heat press to remove wrinkles and moisture. This ensures a smooth surface for the transfer which eventually improves the quality of the final print.
To transfer a printed design onto a t-shirt, place the film with the printed design and melted powder onto the pre-pressed t-shirt and use a heat press to apply heat and pressure, activating the adhesive, bonding the ink to the t-shirt.
Peel off the film after the transfer. Do a hot or cold peel based on the film type. Post-press the t-shirt with a heat press for better durability.
To ensure the durability of printed t-shirts, cure them by letting them dry and set for about 24 hours before washing.

There aren't many things our incredible DTF process cannot achieve! However, when choosing the colors for your artwork, it’s important to note that they may look different on a real product than what you see on your computer monitor. Even if you have calibrated your monitor to a specific color profile, there are various factors that influence the final appearance of colors on a printed product. Because of this, we can’t guarantee color accuracy 100%.
Our printers will convert your submitted print file from RGB to CMYK color space. This color conversion process changes the color gamut, or range of colors that can be expressed. You must be very cautious when using bright neon and pastel RGB values in your print files. Some examples include hot pinks, lime greens, construction orange, highlighter yellow, Easter egg shades, etc. You should also consider other factors like fabric material, garment color, and whether your print will require a white under base layer when choosing colors.
If color accuracy is important to you, we suggest ordering our pre-made color swatches on a sample product. You can use those swatches to decide which RGB values best compare to the desired results when printed on a physical product.
